As more and more people take summer road trips and begin bringing their kids to school – not to mention all the daily commuters – the uptick in cars on the roads means the chances of being in a car accident increase. Even with a safe Nissan Rogue as your go-to vehicle, each moment you’re on the road is a moment you’re at risk.

When that time comes, are you prepared? Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do if you’re in a car crash.

What to do After a Car Crash

If you’ve never been involved in an accident, they can be incredibly stressful. The list that we’ve provided below should help you handle the most basic steps.

  1. Remain where you are and call the police and, if necessary, an ambulance. The police should be contacted first so they can document the accident and mediate. It’s best to do this immediately, while all the details are still fresh in your mind.
  2. If possible, try and get yourself and your passengers to safety by moving your vehicle out of travel lanes. Tip: turn on your vehicle’s hazard lights to alert others around you.
  3. Locate your vehicle’s documents, such as your insurance card, your driver’s license and vehicle registration. Be sure to exchange this information with every individual involved in the car crash.
  4. Contact your auto insurance company to share the details of your accident, including when and where it occurred, your speed, who’s involved, and the other drivers’ insurance information. Your agent will need to know the date and time of the crash so that they can “recreate” the scene of the accident and try to determine what REALLY happened.
  5. Document any damage. It’s very important to document damage to all vehicles involved. The easiest way to do so would be to take pictures with your phone. You should also write down the names, license plate numbers, and insurance information for every other driver or witnesses.
  6. If possible, have your vehicle towed away from the accident scene. Many auto collision centers offer free towing to their shop, so check online to see if your nearby body shop provides this convenience. (Jim Burke Nissan offers emergency towing service straight to our Birmingham collision center.)

We’ve even created a printable PDF that you can print and store in your vehicle in case of any emergencies. View our car accident checklist PDF here.
